CIDB Green Card — Complete Guide for Construction Personnel in Malaysia

Everything you need to know about the CIDB Green Card — what it is, who needs it, how to apply, renew, replace, and the latest fees.

The CIDB Green Card is a mandatory certification issued by Malaysia's Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB). Every worker on a construction site — local or foreign — must carry a valid Green Card.

This guide covers everything: what the card is, who needs it, how to get one, renewal process, replacement procedures, and the latest fees.

1. What Is a CIDB Green Card?

The CIDB Green Card (also called the Construction Personnel Registration Card) proves that the holder has completed safety training and understands workplace health and safety regulations in the construction industry.

Who Needs It?

All individuals working on a construction site must hold a valid CIDB Green Card, including:

  • Construction workers and labourers
  • Site supervisors and foremen
  • Crane and lorry drivers on-site
  • Skilled tradespeople (electricians, plumbers, welders)
  • Even doctors and students working at construction sites

Key Benefits

  • Legal compliance — Mandatory since 1 June 2015 for all construction personnel
  • Takaful protection — Covered under the CIDB Group Construction Personnel Takaful Plan in case of site accidents
  • Better employability — Most employers require a valid Green Card before hiring
  • Professional development — Demonstrates commitment to safety standards
  • Renewable every 1–5 years — Stay current with the latest safety regulations

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Physically and mentally fit for construction work
  • Attend and complete the SICW course (Safety Induction for Construction Workers)
  • Pass the exam at the end of the course
  • Work in or be entering the construction industry

2. CIDB Green Card Renewal

Green Cards must be renewed before expiry to maintain coverage under the CIDB Takaful Plan. Do not let your card expire — you may need to retake the full SICW course if it lapses.

If you don't have a Green Card yet and work in construction, you must register. Without it, you are not eligible for CIDB Takaful protection in case of a site accident.

SICW Course (Mandatory)

Before applying for a new card, you must attend the SICW course (Safety Induction for Construction Workers):

  • Duration: 6–8 hours (one session, starting at 8 AM)
  • Includes two break sessions
  • You receive a Certificate of Attendance after completion
  • Register 3–5 days before the course date with full payment

Important: Without the SICW certificate, you cannot apply for a Green Card.
